At Top Priority Canine Training, our methods are built around modern learning theory and an understanding of how dogs actually learn. We don’t simply teach commands—we teach dogs how their behavior influences the world around them.
Our approach combines classical conditioning, operant conditioning, associative learning, and NePoPo® principles to develop dogs that are confident, motivated, clear-headed, and actively involved in the learning process.
Classical Conditioning: The Power of Association
Dogs are constantly forming associations with people, places, equipment, sounds, and situations. We use this natural learning process intentionally to create more automatic and reliable behavior.
For example, instead of repeatedly telling a dog to sit when the leash comes out, the dog can learn that seeing the leash itself means to sit calmly and wait. The environment begins communicating with the dog, reducing the need for constant commands and micromanagement.
Classical conditioning can also help influence emotional and involuntary responses, creating calmer and more appropriate reactions to everyday situations.
Operant Conditioning: Teaching Through Choices
Operant conditioning focuses on voluntary behavior. The dog makes a choice, experiences an outcome, and learns whether that behavior is worth repeating.
Using the principles of behavioral science, we teach dogs that their behavior has an effect on their environment. Good choices produce desirable outcomes, while unwanted choices may result in the removal of rewards or fair, clearly understood corrections when appropriate.
Rather than constantly giving dogs the answer, we encourage them to think, problem-solve, and discover which choices lead to success.
NePoPo® and Clear Communication
We incorporate principles of the NePoPo® training system, emphasizing motivation, clarity, and transparent communication between dog and handler.
Dogs should understand both how to achieve something desirable and how to avoid something undesirable. Clear and predictable communication reduces confusion and allows the dog to participate confidently in the learning process.
Teaching Dogs How to Learn
Our ultimate goal isn’t simply a dog that memorizes commands. We want dogs to understand associations, choices, communication, and consequences so they become active participants in their own training.
By combining voluntary learning through operant conditioning with associative and involuntary learning through classical conditioning, we develop behavior that becomes increasingly natural, confident, and reliable.
We don’t just train for obedience. We teach dogs how to learn, make better choices, and apply that understanding to the real world.
